IF you are 50 will you upgrade yourself?

Postby raingo on Thu Mar 27, 2008 12:43 pm

I have a friend she is about 50 years old.

She wanted to take up a degree course which is about $20,000 but she is not those very rich people. So she still need to loan from the bank.

She ask for my advise cause her husband discourage her.

She is a tour guide which mean she do not need a degree for her career.

Even when she got the degree but because of a age she is not easy to change a job. And still have to pay the bank back the loan.

Is it worth it? Since govt alway want ask to upgrade.

My mom finally got her degree in nursing when she was 51. I am very proud of her, but the lack of incentives or grants for most people to do so would greatly impede such behaviour in this country.

degree i which area? degree in retail line, servicing line etc?
i would encourage her to get the degree, self upgrade, it is a self-satisfaction cos at her age, still can improve and upgrade herself, nto a lot of ppl can do it..

I'm sure many of us wouldn't mind going for training should we be assigned to do so by our employers, but how many of us actually want to learn or even do stuff that we don't usually do? much less moving out of our comfort zones, and even more so when we don't see the immediate benefits laid in front of us?

i dare say i am way past the comfort zone issue, and i would do anything just for the heck of it. just that i am a very realistic person myself, doing things only if i can value add to myself. even with the WDA's efforts to inform people that retraining is essential for even survival, and not just progress, i think most people would not risk paying for something they would not be recognized for or benefit from.

Am wondering....

If you are 50 years old and cleaning toilet bowl. What you want to upgrade? Style of cleaning toilet bowl? Be the quickest toilet bowl cleaner so that you can clean more toilet bowl? Promote to supervisor of toilet bowl?

If you are 50 years old and sweep the street. What you want to upgrade? Upgrade to use environmentally unfriendly, noisy blower instead of coconut leave brush broom? Upgrade to operate a vehicle to vacuum and polish the floor? Be the quickest/productive sweeper which can sweep more streets?

If you are 50 years old. Think about whether you still keep your job in tomorrow's retrenchment. Think about 10 more years of mortgage you need to pay, think about your kids demanding more pocket money, think about your kid's costlier education and local uni not accepting him/her to the course he/she wants and you need to spend your coffin $$ to send him/her to study oversea (may be malaysia some day).

Oh... upgrade to keep the job... let's see, how many of those being retrenched had done upgrading course in the last 18 months. And if you are 50, try submit your upgrade certs. for your next employment. Perhaps you have more luck? If you ask me, I prefer employing young and strong foreigner.
Cheers,
Szhcornan
